Valerie N. Spivey, DMD
Meet Dr. Spivey
Dr. Valerie Spivey is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Spivey was raised in Cave-In-Rock, Illinois and knew she wanted to work in the health care field from a young age. She graduated from Murray State University in Kentucky with honors with an undergraduate degree in Chemistry. Dr. Spivey completed her Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) degree at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine, where she earned the distinguished honor of the American Academy
of Pediatric Dentistry’s Predoctoral Award.
After dental school and time working in public health as a general dentist, Dr. Spivey completed her residency in Pediatric Dentistry at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, gaining two additional years of specialty training in pediatric dentistry and advanced training in dental trauma and management of different behaviors in children. Dr. Spivey practiced pediatric dentistry in Carbondale, Illinois for several years before following her calling to teach. Dr. Spivey is the Section Head of Pediatric Dentistry at her alma mater Southern Illinois University where she teaches in the lecture halls and the clinical setting.
Dr. Spivey’s favorite part of treating children is helping a child become comfortable in the dental office. Dr. Spivey understands that the experience in the dental office as a child can affect a person’s outlook on dental treatment throughout their life. Outside of the dental office, Dr. Spivey enjoys spending time with her two dogs, a basset hound named Tootie and a boxer named Jax.
